What to plant in spring

Spring Bedding, Perennials & Shrubs Have Arrived

Spring is just around the corner, and, with the weather hopefully starting to improve, now is a great time to get back out into the garden. Our garden centres in Linton and Shadwell are fully stocked with plants perfect for this time of year.

Early Spring Bedding

As the days lengthen and temperatures begin to rise, this is a great time to refresh beds and containers with reliable early bloomers that cope well with cool nights and changeable weather. They are ideal for adding instant freshness and colour while other plants are still waking up.

  • Pansies
Unfazed by light frosts, they provide colour through early spring.
  • Violas
Ideal for edging paths, filling containers, and weaving through borders.
  • Primroses
Colourful classic spring favourites, they love the cool, moist conditions
  • Bellis
Compact plants, that are perfect for edging beds and adding structure.

1-Litre Perennials

We now have 1-litre perennials in stock and March is an excellent time to plant them. The soil is beginning to warm, natural rainfall helps roots settle in and plants have time to establish before the rapid growth of late spring.

Planting now gives them a strong head start for the season ahead. They’re ideal for filling gaps, softening edges, and adding lasting structure to your borders:

Shrubs - Perfect Time For Planting

March is one of the best times to plant shrubs. The ground is workable, moisture levels are good, and plants can establish before summer growth begins.

• Gives roots time to establish before peak growing season.
• Reduces plant stress compared to planting in hot, dry weather.
• Adds immediate structure, height and seasonal colour to your garden.

Gardening Tips For Spring

Prepare your garden beds: Clear away winter debris and mix compost into the soil to add nutrients and improve plant growth. Healthy soil is essential for strong plants in the growing season.

Water new plants regularly: Freshly planted flowers and vegetables need consistent watering until their roots become established and can draw moisture from the soil on their own.

Protect plants from late frost: Early spring weather can still bring frost. Cover delicate plants overnight with garden fleece or a light cloth to prevent cold damage.

Following these simple steps helps create a healthy garden and encourages strong growth throughout the spring season.
