Ask Alan! faq's from riverside plants

What ingredients are commonly used in peat-free compost, and are they sustainable?

Peat-free compost is typically composed of a mixture of sustainable and organic materials. Common ingredients include composted bark, coir (from coconut husks), wood fibre, green waste, composted garden waste, and various organic fertilisers. These materials are renewable and can be sourced from sustainable forestry practices, waste recycling, and other environmentally friendly sources. By utilising these alternatives, the reliance on peat extraction is reduced, promoting more sustainable gardening practices. Green waste would not be my preferred peat free component due to it not being consistent in its properties as a growing medium.
