Ask Alan! faq's from riverside plants

How can I control aphid on my plants with either chemical or chemical free methods?

Chemical Methods:

Insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils: These can be effective in smothering and killing aphids on contact. Follow the instructions on the product label for safe and effective use.

Neem oil: This natural pesticide disrupts the insect’s life cycle and acts as a repellent for aphids.

Systemic insecticides: These are absorbed by the plant and ingested by the aphids when they feed on the sap. Be cautious when using systemic insecticides, as they can also harm beneficial insects.

Chemical-free Methods:

Strong water spray: Use a strong stream of water from a hose to dislodge aphids from plants.

Attract beneficial insects: Encourage natural predators like ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps to your garden, as they feed on aphids.

Introduce companion plants: Some plants like marigolds, chives, and garlic can deter aphids when grown alongside susceptible plants.
